Ethnically Diverse Communities

As a Community Builder working with diverse communities, the Ethnically Diverse Communities Community Builder champion the voices of underrepresented groups, particularly those from the BAME community, ensuring their concerns are acknowledged and their needs addressed. This role involves building strong networks and identifying inclusive opportunities that encourage meaningful participation and community empowerment. They also collaborate with partner organisations to enhance quality of life through a range of indoor and outdoor events that promote connection, visibility, and shared values.

'With over 25 years of experience in social care, I have dedicated my career to campaigning for social justice and equality. My work has focused on supporting asylum seekers, refugees, and marginalised individuals from global communities, enhancing my interpersonal skills and equipping me with a wide range of transferable skills applicable across diverse settings.

Since relocating my family to Plymouth in 1997, I co-founded the Devon and Cornwall Refugee Support Council (DCRS) and have contributed to several city-wide initiatives, such as The Respective Festival, Refugee Week and many more. My professional journey includes working with the British Red Cross, Devon and Cornwall Housing (Plymouth Foyer), Communities Against Poverty, Devonport Regeneration Company, Theatre Royal Plymouth, and the Youth Offending Team, among others. I now serve as a Community Builder.

In my current role, I work closely with the global majority communities at the grassroots level to build confident, resilient, and connected communities. This involves identifying and assets mapping local, listening to residents, and fostering cooperative efforts to develop initiatives that reflect the needs of the community and aspirations.'

Interests - meeting new people especially over a cuppa, listening to world music and long walks in nature while listening to the birds.
